HIV Tests & Screens

HIV 28 Days Duo Test

The HIV Duo test screenings are done for HIV 1 and 2 antibodies and the p24 antigen. This test is highly accurate from 4 weeks post contact.
The results are available within 24 hours of the lab receiving your sample. If the initial test indicates a positive result, your sample will be sent to the reference laboratory for confirmation, and our doctor will invite you in for a review of the test results.

Early HIV Screening - HIV 10 Day Post Exposure PCR NAAT Test

The test provides results for possible exposures at an accelerated rate post exposure at ten days instead of 28. Though the test can be slightly less accurate than HIV DUO testing, it can be used to provide peace of mind to those who are worried. Typically you should undergo a DUO test after 28 days post potential exposure has elapsed. The results for this test usually require three working days to return from the laboratory.

What is HIV

Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is a kind of virus that can replicate and damage the cells in your immune system. This also weakens your ability to fight against several diseases and infections.

AIDS, also called Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome denotes several life-threatening illnesses and infections that take place only when the immune system gets damaged due to HIV virus. However, AIDS cannot be transmitted from one person to the other but HIV virus can.

There is no treatment available for HIV, however there are effective drug treatments that allow majority of people with this virus to lead a long and healthy life.

How You Can Get HIV

HIV is usually found in the anal fluids, semen, vaginal, blood and breast milk. It cannot be spread due to urine, sweat or saliva as this virus does not stay outside your body for a long time.

The most common way for getting HIV in the UK is through anal or vaginal sex without using a condom.

Other ways of contracting this HIV are the following:

  • sharing syringes or needles
  • transmission from mother to baby at the time of pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding

Symptoms of HIV

  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • High fever
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Rashes
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomitting

When You Should Undergo an HIV Test

You need to seek medical advice early if you are concerned about HIV by visiting a clinic which performs private HIV testing in London. Earlier diagnoses through HIV testing, result in better outcomes for patients.

At STI Clinic London, our doctors provide Early Detection Screen HIV test, which is available within 10 days after unprotected intercourse. However, we would recommend that you follow up with further HIV tests at 4 weeks and the next in 3 months, as and when needed. You may discuss about it in details with your private doctor.

How to Prevent HIV

Anyone who has had sex without a condom or shares needles is at greater risk of an HIV infection. You can prevent HIV by using protection at the time of sexual intercourse and do not share needles.

Emergency anti-HIV medication known as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) might prevent you from getting infected when started within the three days of possible exposure to this kind of virus.
